From warinangola.com: 61 Base Workshop (61 B Wksp) [Afr: 61 Basiswerkplaas (61 B Wkp)] was first established in September 1939. In that year all the Union Defence Force technical facilities were formed into a separate corps and transferred to Premier Mines. The Unit was then known as the Vehicle Transport Section, with motor mechanics, spray-painters and sign writers, and an experimental section as part of the Workshop. In 1946, under the name of [62?] 61 General Base Workshop [Afr: 61 Algemene Basiswerkplaas], the Unit was moved to Tek Base, Lyttelton. In 1962 the name of the Unit was officially changed to 61 Base Workshop. The main aim of the Unit was to carry out base repair on all SA Army equipment, excluding signals and engineering equipment. The Unit exercised its right of Freedom of Entry into Verwoerdburg for the first time in November 1988.
